yOUR OAXACA

a VIBRANT CITY

So Much to Experience

It is easy to see why Oaxaca City, officially known as Oaxaca de Juarez, was voted Best City in the World by the prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine recently, as is a city that has so many elements – beautiful architecture dating back to before to the colonial times, a rich and vibrant culture, with festivals and traditions maintained and represented without missing a beat today, a flourishing art scene which has no known rival in Mexico, and seriously delicious food and drink which is now famous the world over, and which goes well beyond mezcal and mole (although it has to be said, mezcal and mole are two of the city´s most cherished exports!!).

Literally on the doorstep of Siglo 17 are some of Oaxaca´s most famous landmarks, including the iconic Church of Santa Domingo, arguably one of Mexico´s most photographed buildings, the Etnobotanical Gardens, the Zocolo Square and some of the city´s most formidable dining options, including Los Danzantes and Casa Oaxaca. There are also various brilliantly curated museums and art galleries, all within a short walk from the hotel, best explored on foot and at leisure, and definitely without keeping an eye on the time.

CULTURE & MEZCAL

Exploring Ancient History and Traditions

Further afield are some must-see locations such as Monte Alban (the fascinating site of a very well preserved ancient city), Hierve el Agua (the mountainous hot springs, a uniquely beautiful setting and well worth a day trip), El Arbol de Tule (thought to be the widest tree in the world, located in the grounds of the Church of Santa Maria de Tule) and Lugar de los Muertos (a fascinating Mixtec and Zapotec archeological site known as the City of the Dead).

An essential part of your stay in Oaxaca must surely be a tour of the mezcal plantations in and around Mitla and a visit to an authentic mezcal distillery to learn the art of artisan mezcal production. These centuries old traditional methods using fire pit for smoking the agave and stone wheels pulled by horses are still largely used today. On such tours you can enjoy sampling mezcals whilst gaining knowledge of the history and heritage of each tipple, from the smooth and smokey Espadins, to the bold and earthy flavours of Cuishe, all the way to the refined heights of Tobala.
